My third major project of the semester was a gesture drawing project. We started by spending a couple class periods doing short timed gesture drawings in our sketchbooks. The sketches were based on pictures on the board just to practice getting out forms right. We used multiple mediums including pencil, charcoal, graphite sticks, sharpie, and crayons. We did a variety of different poses from different angles to practice many different forms.
Then we began to work on our composition. I chose to do jumping figure for my composition because I felt that they had the most interesting shapes. Then we began to lightly sketch out the forms with charcoal and pencil. Next we added color to our figures. I chose two shades of blue and then white chalk pastels to really make the forms pop and the shade variations show the highlights and shadows. Then I painted the background with neutral shades of acrylic paint in order to really make my figures stand out.
The hardest part of this project for me was picking out and laying out my composition. I struggled to decide just how I wanted my figures to be placed, what I wanted them to do, and how many figures I wanted. Once I decided on my layout and my figures, the hardest part was done.
Overall, I enjoyed this project and how it turned out.
