My first project of the semester was the expressive lines project. We started by laying out large pieces of paper on the floor. Then we sat on the paper and used our bodies, charcoal, and chalk pastels to make lines. We got some really cool shapes and mine turned out to be very symmetrical. After we finished with the pastels we hung our projects up and went over them with acrylic paint. The mixture of pastels and paint gave the projects an interesting texture.
Our Project was inspired by the artist Heather Hansen. She does performance art with a live audience where she makes large symmetrical pieces using charcoal. Her pieces have flowing lines that come from her smooth body movements. While our projects are smaller than hers, I think the general flow is the same. Our additions of color and paint really make the pieces interesting.
At first I has some trouble getting into the flow of making the drawing but eventually I got into the zone and it was really nice. The more I worked, the more I really connected to the piece. This project really taught me to worry less about the shapes I was putting down and just go with the flow of the project.
