Our latest project is a collage inspired by the artist Derek Gorges. We started by reference photos of our classmates to use as a reference for our project. I took a picture of my friend Caroline as she kneeled, looked forward, and held a yard stick that I would later turn into a sword. We did a few practice sketches in our sketchbooks and then moved on to our full sized paper. We sketched out the basic outlines of our people and got out proportions right before we started adding our collage elements. I decided that I wanted my figure to be inspired by Celaena Sardothien from the Throne of Glass novel series by Sarah J. Maas. I started by making the hair using red, yellow, and orange paper to make it look almost like fire. Then I moved on and collaged the body, the sword, and the background. We then decided that my collage was lacking something so we decided to add acrylic paint. I used white and gray paint to add highlights and armor like patterns to the armor and then added tan paint to the face and hands.
This has been my favorite project of the semester. Using different values in our collage was really fun and I really enjoyed the subject I chose.
