My second project of the semester was the contour lines project. First we took a few pictures of our feet and practiced sketching them and practiced hatching and cross hatching in ours sketchbooks. We then chose the composition that we liked the best and moved it onto our project paper. We first did a rough and light sketch of our feet and then went back and added hatching, contour lines, and cross hatching to give the feet values and shape.
I decided to do a view of my feet and calves from above because I thought it was an interesting angle and gave an interesting perspective on something we do not normally look at. Everyone in the class chose a different composition and all of out projects look different that the others while still using the same idea.
The hardest part about this project for me was getting the values and shading to look natural. This is the only the second time that I have done a project in ink pens and it is the first time that I have used ink pens on an organic subject. It is hard to get over the fear of not being able to erase and not being able to blend as you could with pencils or paint. Once I got the hang of it, this project was very fun and was great practice using pen.
